So I think Chris and I took care of the ant problem.
We cut some PVC pipe into short pieces to become some new legs for the bin. Then we placed the legs in some bowls of water (I made it soapy for good measure, but don't think that would have made a difference). So basically, the ants would have to walk across the water to get into the bin (or out). It's a good moat.
I had also read some good tips for safe ways to get rid of ants. (Safe for your family and pets, not safe for the ants).
Cinnamon will suck all the moisture out of ants, basically mummifying them upon ingestion.
Corn meal will expand in their stomachs when they drink water, "exploding" them.
Who knows if these two things are true, but we put some down just in case.

Wow, I have never heard of those things before. I actually had to laugh when I thought about the poor ants :) I'll try to remember that if we ever have an ant problem. (this is Bryan VanHaitsma's wife by the way :) )
I agree with Erika - new tricks to minimize ants on the prowl - I like it - hope it works for you. I'm guessing that these are the itty-bitty ants that you have, right? The kind I really hate are the big black ones. Bad experience during childhood and all that!
My first thought was to nail 'em w/ Raid, but that might hurt the residents of the worm bin! And, it is oh, so NOT green!
Good thing you guys are on the research and development end of the Major Produce staff. We can learn so much from you when Mike is ready to start raising animals again.
Love,
Karen
